Swimming in the Combat Zone
In case any of you were wondering if our troops in Iraq are able to go swimming during their off hours, here is the answer:
Looks like a nice outdoor 50M pool...
The TEU containers are a bit of an eyesore though.
Thanks to Edwin Longwell (AZ National Guard) for providing these pictures from Iraq. In the near future, he will have a few more pictures to share from his time in-country.
If you know of any other masters swimmers who are serving our country overseas, drop me a note and I can include their pictures and stories on the blog.

Brute Squad Meet Report
This was the 25th annual Brute Squad Meet. It was given the secondary name of Rose Steward Brute Meet in recognition of one of Arizona Masters original members, and the original Brute Meet director who passed away in 2002.
This meet was another success. We had 39 swimmers entered in the meet, and seven swimmers swam the Brute Events. The brute events are the hardest events in long course swimming. They are the 200 meter butterfly, 400meter individual medley and the 1500 meter freestyle. Winning the brute award this year were, Jim Stites, Jeff Ashbeck, Chris Fischer, Dana Hunter, Gordon Gillin, Michelle Worden and Anna Ray DeLozier. Much missed this year was Edie Gruender, who couldn’t make it because of some medical problems. Edie has never missed a Brute Meet; as far back as I can remember.
We had a full host of certified officials, and not one DQ in the meet.

Articles
There are some good articles in the latest edition of Fitness Plus magazine. On page 12 there is a good article on weight training for swimmers. It discusses the controversey surrounding weight training and swimming along with some exercises that may be beneficial to swimmers of all abilities.
Page 30 has a good article on open water swimming that also contains good advice on several topics. This is timely since there are several upcoming open water events both here in Arizona and in California.
When you get a chance, grab a copy and read the articles.

Tri-Bods & Mods
Some of you may have seen a familiar face on the cover of SWEAT Magazine. The young woman in the middle is none other than Chris Jeffrey! She is one of the models for the Swimsuit Edition of SWEAT, along with other area triathletes. The article starts on page 19 and contains many triathlon-specific suits for both men and women. Of course, Chris was also a championship-level swimmer at ASU and is currently a top-ranked triathlete. So next time you see he either training or posing, ask her for advice on walking down the runway at fashion shows ;-)
