Postal Pentathlon

Minnesota Masters is hosting a postal pentathlon this fall. Their LMSC has been organizing this event for the past couple of years, which is one that Arizona Masters could adopt. It may be a good event to do for a practice, especially on a Saturday.

The pentathlon will consist of five events; butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. You will have the option of choosing sprint, middle distance, or ironman for the swims. For more details, go to the web page, the Yahoo group site, or the MSN group site.

This event will run through December 15th so there are several weeks left to get your times in. Good luck and go postal...in the pool.

Flagstaff's Mountain Masters' Fall Classic

From Liz Hobbs

Last weekend, 40 masters swimmers from Arizona and Colorado assembled at NAU's Wall Aquatic Center for a weekend of fun and competition. The weekend started with a hike up the San Francisco Peaks to experience the beautiful fall colors. On Saturday afternoon, everyone had a chance to be videotaped, both over and underwater, and to work on starts, turns, and strokes. The day ended with a delicious pasta dinner for participants and their guests.

The meet on Sunday went wonderfully, thanks in large part to Judy Gillies and Laura Winslow, who spent their weekend travelling to Flagstaff and volunteering their time to officiate and help. Appropriately, the Mel Dyck Swimmer of the Meet award was won by it's namesake, Mel Dyck. He raced over 700 meters of butterfly and swam 3 200's back to back to back. He is an inspiration to us all, and it was great to have him and Grace back from Colorado for our meet.

We look forward to holding the Fall Classic annually, and hope to see you here next year.

New and Improved

Right now, the Arizona Masters website is being modified by our intrepid webmaster Mike Carey. He is the man behind the Carb-BOOM! energy gel website, which is a very well-done and professional site. His talents will certainly be appreciated and we will all see the results of his efforts soon. Stay tuned and keep checking in regularly for updates.

2006 One Hour Postal Swim

As you know, every year there is a One Hour Postal event. This year is no different, except that the USMS National Office is using this event to help raise runds for hurricane relief. The event form will be available on the website and should also appear in the newsletter. Here is what Tracy Grilli has to say about this worthwhile event.

The 2006 One Hour Postal Championship is being used to raise funds for relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims. Please note that you may add any donation to your entry fee to support those in need. It is the intention that funds generated will be directed by USMS leadership to those USMS members severely affected by the storm, or to the clubs or organizations that support their swimming efforts.

Also, clubs, LMSCs and any other interested parties may wish to consider donating outside of the One Hour event. You are welcome to submit your donation, payable to USMS, to:

USMS Katrina Fund
USMS National Office
PO Box 185
Londonderry, NH 03053-0185

Please note on the check that funds shall be directed to the USMS Katrina Fund.

A 2006 USMS Membership is required to enter this event. People planning to enter this event should obtain their 2006 USMS Registration in November or December 2005.

Please spread the word to your members and THANK YOU for opening up and contributing to our fellow swimmers in need.

Tracy

Let's help our fellow citizens and swimmers by participating in this event. One suggestion is to make this a Saturday workout for those who are interested in it. Regardless, make sure you sign up and make this your first "meet" of the new year.
